Yorkshire

Yorkshire is a historic county of north England and the biggest in Britain. Due to its great size contrasted to other English counties, functions have been increasingly undertaken over time by its subdivisions, which have also been subject to regular reform.

Venturing inland there's the Yorkshire Wolds. The Wolds is an excellent place for hikers, with the long distance Wolds Way going from the Humber Bridge (among the longest in the world) up to Filey Brigg. Dotted among the Wolds are little hamlets, all are pretty unique and full of personality. The North Yorkshire Moors is one of Britain's National Parks. It is home to the biggest expanse of heather in the UK.

For a fairly good pint and a brilliant view, make a trip to the Black Lion on Blakey Ridge which is just above Rosedale Valley. The boozer is at one of the highest parts of the moors, and is really remote. In winter, if you're fortunate enough you might be encircled there for one or two days - sufficient time to taste the tasty food that's served. Yorkshire incorporates the North York Moors and Yorkshire Dales National Parks, and part of the Top District National Park. Nidderdale and the Howardian Hills are delegated Areas of Superb Natural Beauty.

Spurn Point, Flamborough Head and the tidal North York Moors are appointed Heritage Coast areas and are noted for their picturesque perspectives with rough cliffs e.g. the jet cliffs at Whitby, the limestone cliffs at Filey and the chalk cliffs at Flamborough Head. Moor House - Higher Teesdale, most being part of the previous North Riding of Yorkshire, is one of England's biggest state nature reserves. Don't forget a trip to Whitby - home of Bram Stokers Dracula.

Some of the finest fish and chip restaurants in Yorkshire are going to be found in Whitby, almost all of the fish and shell fish is domestically landed from the North Sea into Whitby Harbor. From the harbor, you can take a leisure cruise on the old Whitby Life Boat, a fast speedboat or a cruiser; these trips take from half an hour to an hour and are awfully keenly priced.
